ROOF SHINGLES

Hawaii’s Most Popular Roof Type

Shingle roof systems are very common in Hawaii.  They are affordable, easy to install, versatile, and very aesthetically pleasing.  Unfortunately, the blazing Hawaiian sun dries them out and they become brittle.  Luckily, coatings are a great solution if applied properly.

Shingle roofs can be coated with many types of top coats, some of which can be tinted in over 36 different colors.

Look around, most roofs in your neighborhood are Asphalt Shingles (also called Composition Shingles.) There’s a good reason for their success. They are moderately priced and perform very well when properly installed. They are usually classified by the length of their Material Warranties: Lifetime, 50 year, 30 year, 20 year. The longer the Warranty—the heavier the shingle will weight.

Warranties:

Life, 50, 30 years for Material

The Architect 80 has been a huge success in Hawaii for decades. They keep improving their warranties, especially against high winds. Do not count on the government or even your insurance company, to bail you out if the next hurricane decides to hits Oahu directly, instead of Kaui. Go for the highest wind rating you can afford.

The algae warranties are really important in Hawaii , because nothing makes your roof looks dingy like a buch of streaky mildew. Plus it eats away at your protective granules and lowers the life of your roof. And it makes your home hot in the summer. Be wise.

  • The Asphalt Shingle (also known as Composition Shingle) is perhaps the most popular sloped roof of all time in the United States. It’s low cost, easy installation, and it’s ability to be walked on without breaking make it well loved.
  • The heavier versions of the shingle have good wind uplift ratings when they are first installed. Over time they become brittle, due to the sun’s UV exposure, and can blow off. They can, however, be preserved with a waterproof Roof Coating, such as Hawaiian SunGuard.
  • The look can be quite dramatic when you go for the higher end Presidential or Grand Manor shingles.
  • Your roof will look like everyone else’s in your neighborhood. Is that a bad thing?
  • These roofs can be very hot in the summer. Be sure to install some solar roof vents to comply with the Manufacturer’s requirements for their longest Warranties.
  • There costs have risen with increased oil prices worldwide.

Calculations are estimates only. Additional materials may be required dependent on roof condition and other factors.

Step 1

Clean and let your roof dry completely! We suggest using a mild organic cleaner and a pressure washer if available, if not a hose and hard bristled brush should get the job done.

Step 2

Reinforce and seal all key ways and weak areas with a high grade roof repair sealant, such as CRS Mastic.

Step 3

Primer according to product instructions. Make sure to follow instructions for shingle roofs. Do not apply if it is expected to rain within 4-5 hours of application. Let primer cure for 48 hours to 5 days.

Step 4

Once roof is primed, again making sure it is dry, apply desired top coat according to product instructions. There are many options with many benefits. Do not apply if it expected to rain within 1-2 hours.

Your newly coated roof should last for many years if applied properly.
